Six migrants died in eastern Bulgaria when the car they were travelling in plunged into a lake during a police chase, a police spokesman told AFP on Friday.
The accident, in which three other migrants were injured, occurred late Thursday near Burgas, a port city on the Black Sea.
“The police initially tried to stop the vehicle… but the driver didn’t heed them,” the spokesman said, adding that the intervention had taken place 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Burgas.
Officers tried twice more to stop the car. At the third attempt, just outside Bourgas, the car skidded off the road into the lake.
The driver, a Romanian citizen, was arrested, police said. Police did not give the nationalities of the dead and injured. Bulgaria, a member of the European Union, borders Turkey, which is not in the 27-nation bloc.-OFIA, Bulgaria(AFP)
